Tyne and Wear High Sheriff
Awards 2021
A phenomenal 61 groups have received a High Sheriff’s Award in recognition of their work supporting young people across Tyne and Wear.
The High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear, Sarah Stewart OBE DL, presented the awards in a virtual celebration ceremony on Wednesday (25th March), filmed and produced by students of Gateshead College.
Through a huge variety of activities, from sport and the arts to business and education, all of the groups focus on helping young people aged up to 25 gain the life skills that will help them secure education, training and employment opportunities.
“Many of the groups are supported by volunteers and operate day in day out below the radar, so I’m delighted that through the Awards we can help raise their profile and celebrate what they do,” said Sarah Stewart.
I’m particularly proud of how they have all adapted to virtual activities during the pandemic, and some have transformed what they do, providing valuable support services for some of the most vulnerable groups facing isolation during lockdown.”
The Awards come with small grants, typically £750. There are also 8 higher award winners of up to a maximum of £2,500 from a fund managed by Tyne Wear and Northumberland Community Foundation.
The fund complements the work of the High Sheriff, which is an independent non-political Royal appointment for a single year. Their role is to support the Crown and the judiciary, lending active support and encouragement to crime prevention, emergency services and the voluntary sector.
During 2021/21, among other duties, Mrs Stewart contacted and virtually visited all but two of the award-winning 61 organisations.
“I’ve had the joy of attending on-line dance classes, film creating sessions, drama workshops and training events.
As a result, I’ve been able to build an extensive picture of the range of activities and support provided for young people across Tyne and Wear – in particular, I’ve been able to see at first hand the sheer hard work and amazing contribution of volunteers, community groups and charities. I’ve also built an up-to-the-minute understanding of the significant impact on such groups as a result of Covid,” she added.
The awards event was produced by Film Students at Gateshead College as part of their Level 3 Diploma course.
They produced a series of films showcasing the work of all the award winners to create a celebratory and joyful event.
“The Tyne & Wear High Sheriff Awards recognise achievements from groups across our area. We are always amazed by the huge range and number of organisations that come forward and apply to the Community Foundation. It demonstrates just how much brilliant work is happening across Tyne & Wear to engage young people in positive and worthwhile activities.
This is especially so through such an extraordinary time. We are delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these groups at the virtual awards ceremony,” said Rob Williamson, CEO, Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.
